They say it’s the details that make big things happen. In my case the opposite is true. Those of you that have known me a little longer, have heard me babbling about wanting a barista job repetitively. Kcc (coffee culture centre), a tiny, rather classic café just behind the Dam, was looking for a new coffee hero and the vacancy explicitly mentioned that experience wasn’t a requirement. We’ll teach you! When I saw the ad some weeks back, I wrote them with great excitement and in my mind I was already hired: pouring coffees with the expression of the extremely-happy emoji.. frowning while practising my perfect rosetta.. None of this will happen, as I forgot to update my CV that is apparently still mentioning “Rotterdam” as home. One tiny erroneous detail and zero big jolly things as result.
Bright side is, that the girl behind the counter was totally lovely and chatty and we ended up socializing with a.. (here it comes) coffee on the house! This is how I learnt that the café is actually a family enterprise: one of the photo’s I made shows father and son in action.
Moreover, the coffee was the bomb tastewise, which might have to do with the fact that kcc likes to roasts all beans in-house: the guarantee for real authentic house blends.
Even though I did not get the time to properly sit down (new year, new masters), the ambience felt totally enjoyable from the first encounter. A delightful warm green combined with classic off-white fills the walls with coffee vibes. Attributes are red velvet chairs, the English black-white patterned tiles and simple bar chairs that together give the place an inviting aura. The menu is printed on the wall and the calligraphy has a bit of a 20s Art Nouveau touch to it. It even depicts the different espresso types available with simplified icons (amount of foam and proportions).
For sure, the details áre spreading big messages at kcc: we know how to serve your coffee. I guess man is never really done learning: next time, I will think about the small things first. And then hopefully one day, you will find me behind the counter.
Good day for now,
