“The people you find in your favourite cafés are an extension of yourself”. This wise line came from a dear friend of mine last week. It is a fact, that us people evaluate our surroundings within ±5 minutes, thanks to our evolutionary urge to be safe. And indeed, the “kind of people” that surround a place are a big deal in the final judgement to like or dislike.

The day before yesterday was a sunny city strolling day for me and my friend, and we found such a place that demands to be given a “like”. The two guys inside Het Stadspaleis were brewing coffees and making toast for the laid-back customers inside and outside on the terrace. The blond one gave me the menu which said: black coffee 2€, white coffee 2€, special coffee 2,50€. You can argue about the white coffee, but the special one.. I had to ask. Answer: it is everything you want that is not just an ordinary coffee. Almond milk with cinnamon, chocolate syrup and coconut foam on top? Sure, If you like. No guarantee that it will be good. I chose it and it was terribly sweet. My bad, and I laughed my ass of. I captured a little bit of the Rotterdam mentality that I truly miss at times. That’s when I decided to become a regular here.

Het Stadspaleis has everything I want to be and truly am at times when hipster life doesn’t get a hold on me. For starters, the “building” that pretty much looks like the house in Disney’s “Up”, lies casually in the middle of the street. You literally bump into its wooden white and yellow planks. Adorable chairs from simple steel with striped pillows await you, but I’d suggest you take a look inside where the fire burns. Candles are on all the “tables” that look more like floating wooden platters. A few benches, a few art pieces and a magnificent view of the city center through the windowpanes.

The people you find in your cafés are an extension of yourself, or at least your favourite version of it. I want to keep coming back to of the city palace to restrain from elitist city airs and be the most down-to-earth coffee princess Amsterdam has ever seen.

Have a lovely Monday,

PS. The café was once used for a Dutch RomCom called “Mannenharten”. It’s not great, but it is very typical and fun to see the place in use for a different purpose.
